The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has taken a bold step in modernizing the nation’s aviation sector with the successful installation of Aeronautical Fixed Telecommunication Network (AFTN) systems in 26 airports across the country.
Announcing the development at a sensitization workshop in Lagos, the Director of Air Traffic Services, Mr. John Tayo, described the installations as “a significant milestone in strengthening aeronautical communication and enhancing the safety and efficiency of air navigation in Nigeria.”
The new AFTN infrastructure, which operates on the X.25 protocol but leverages robust global satellite facilities, is designed to provide greater reliability, wider coverage, and faster message transmission.
It also serves as a dependable alternative to the Air Traffic Service Message Handling System (AMHS), ensuring continuity in case of disruptions.
Highlighting the importance of AFTN in global aviation, Tayo noted that the system remains the backbone of aeronautical communication worldwide, supporting timely dissemination of meteorological information, urgent safety messages, and seamless connectivity between Nigeria and other International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) member states.
“With installations across 26 airports, Nigeria now boasts an extensive and resilient communication infrastructure to support aviation growth,” he said, adding that the modernization effort reinforces NAMA’s commitment to global best practices in air navigation services.
The workshop, convened to train operational and technical staff on the features and functionalities of the new systems, also aims to strengthen capacity in managing and troubleshooting the network for optimal performance.
He urged participants to approach the training with professionalism and dedication, stressing that the success of the new infrastructure depends on its effective operation and maintenance.
“This modernization is another demonstration of NAMA’s commitment to safety, efficiency, and technological advancement in Nigeria’s aviation sector. Together, we must build a communication system that stands as the pride of Africa and meets the highest global standards,” he said.
