The African Aviation and Aerospace University (AAAU), Abuja, has marked a major breakthrough in its academic development with the successful external defense of its first-ever postgraduate thesis.
The landmark event featured pioneer M.Sc. candidate, Oluodo Tola, who defended his research titled “Potential of Sustainable Aviation Fuel for Economic Growth in Nigeria.”
The thesis is the first postgraduate work to complete AAAU’s full academic process from proposal stage to external defense signaling a new phase in the university’s pursuit of excellence in aviation and aerospace studies.
A distinguished panel led by the external examiner, Prof. Ibrahim Jaro of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, visited Abuja to conduct the assessment, underscoring the significance of the occasion for the young institution.
The session commenced with formal introductions and a welcome message delivered on behalf of the Registrar, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, by the Principal Assistant Registrar, Mr. Dennis Joseph Onwukwe.
The Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies, Dr. Ayodele Gatta, also addressed participants, outlining the vision guiding the postgraduate school’s growth.
Despite official engagements in Brazil, the Registrar, the Director of Academic Planning, Prof. Yahaya Zayanna, and Dr. Chado joined virtually. Several lecturers and students also attended online, reflecting the institution’s hybrid academic approach.
Tola presented his research within the allotted 15 minutes before Prof. Jaro began a detailed, page-by-page review of the work. At the end of the exercise, the candidate an M.Sc. student in Air Transport Management was given two weeks to incorporate all required corrections.
He earned commendations from the examination panel, which noted that the final award of his degree will depend on the approval of the School of Postgraduate Studies Board and the University Senate.
In his closing remarks, the Registrar expressed deep appreciation to Prof. Jaro and all participants, describing the defense as a “solid benchmark” for future postgraduate examinations.
He added that the milestone provides vital direction for students and faculty while reinforcing AAAU’s commitment to high academic standards in the aviation and aerospace fields.
The successful defense is widely seen as a defining moment for AAAU as it strengthens its position as a leading institution for advanced aviation research and training in Africa.
