Lagos Blasts Korope Protest, Warns on Lekki Bus Reform Compliance

Date:

The Lagos State Government has strongly condemned the blockage of the busy CMS–Lekki–Epe Expressway by Korope mini bus operators, calling the action a violation of agreements reached with transport unions and stakeholders.

The disruption, which occurred on February 17 and 18, 2026, followed protests by some operators but was described by the government as contrary to resolutions jointly agreed upon with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN).

The state said discussions on reforming public transport operations along the Lekki–Epe corridor began in 2024, leading to a stakeholders’ meeting on June 27, 2024, where a communique was endorsed by transport officials and union leaders.

The agreement outlined plans to deploy high-capacity buses, move Korope vehicles to inner routes, introduce electronic ticketing, regulate bus operations, and improve safety and security.

At another meeting on December 2, 2025, stakeholders agreed that the new bus scheme would take off on December 8, 2025.

The first phase will operate on major routes including Ajah–CMS Marina/Obalende, Ajah–Oshodi, Ajah–Berger, and Ajah–Iyana Ipaja, with further expansion to Epe planned.

The government explained that one operator will run express services while others will provide stopping services, as part of efforts to streamline transport on the corridor.

Special Adviser on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, said the government remains committed to ensuring commuter comfort, safety, security, and stable fares.

Buses in the new scheme will carry Lagos State’s blue-and-white colour scheme, QR-coded compliance stickers, unique identification numbers, and Touch and Pay ticketing tags.

Drivers will also wear official Ministry of Transportation identification badges.

Commissioner for Transport- Oluwaseun Osiyemi

The state government urged all transport operators to adhere strictly to the agreed reforms, stressing that the initiative is aimed at creating a safer, more organized, and efficient transport system for residents.
