The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has organized an essential workshop aimed at addressing critical challenges in Nigeria’s aviation training sector and enhancing regulatory compliance.
The event brings together key industry stakeholders to discuss disparities in aviation training opportunities, as well as the necessity for continuous improvements in certification and regulatory processes.
Over the past decade, the NCAA has played a significant role in establishing a structured certification and approval system for aviation organizations in Nigeria. However, a major challenge identified during the workshop is the imbalance in training opportunities.
Many Nigerian aviation professionals seek training abroad; while the country’s Approved Training Organizations (ATOs) struggle to attract international trainees despite having the necessary capacity.
“We need to examine why international students are not coming here for training, even though we have the required infrastructure and capacity,” stated Mr. Adoyie Sunnie, General Manager DOLTS and Head ATO Inspectorate, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority. The workshop aims to explore strategies to enhance the global competitiveness and reputation of Nigeria’s ATOs, ensuring they meet international standards and attracts a more diverse pool of trainees.
Another central focus of the discussions is the need for regulatory compliance and continuous improvement in training and certification processes. Sunnie emphasized the role of stakeholder engagement in shaping aviation regulations, noting, “The rulemaking process in Nigeria is open to the public, and every regulation promulgated requires stakeholder involvement. Through this workshop, we hope to identify necessary amendments that will improve the quality and standards of aviation training in Nigeria.”
Participants at the workshop will review current regulatory frameworks, assess gaps, and propose measures to strengthen safety oversight and certification systems. The NCAA remains committed to fostering a robust aviation sector by implementing reforms that ensure Nigeria’s training institutions align with global best practices and regulatory expectations.
As discussions continue, the insights gathered from industry experts and stakeholders will be instrumental in driving necessary policy changes.
