The Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport, situated along the Ilisan-Iperu corridor in Ogun State, is poised to reshape Nigeria’s aviation and economic sectors with its ambitious vision of becoming the country’s first aerotropolis. During a recent facility tour, government officials and aviation consultants highlighted the bold plans and significant progress made on this transformative initiative. With state-of-the-art infrastructure, advanced technology, and a forward-thinking design, the Gateway Airport stands as a beacon of opportunity and progress for Ogun State and Nigeria.
A Vision Beyond Aviation
At the heart of the Gateway Agro-Cargo Airport is the aerotropolis concept—a holistic approach that combines an airport with industrial parks, residential areas, and business districts.
Describing the airport’s potential, Captain Dapo Olumide, a consultant to the Ogun State Government, called it a “game-changer” for Nigeria’s economy.
“This airport isn’t just about flights; it’s the foundation for an entire city centered on trade, industry, and connectivity,” Olumide said. “With the capacity to handle large aircraft like the Boeing 777 and Airbus A380, we’re building for the future.”
The airport’s focus on agricultural exports, especially non-perishable goods, positions it as a strategic hub for farmers, businesses, and investors. Equipped with cutting-edge cargo-handling technology, it promises to connect Ogun State’s agro-industrial economy to global markets.
Strategic Location for Growth
Ogun State’s Commissioner for Transportation, Engr. Olugbenga Dairo, emphasised the airport’s strategic location:
“The Gateway Agro-Cargo Airport was conceived in 2019 under the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Dapo Abiodun, to leverage Ogun State’s position as Nigeria’s gateway to the world. This aerotropolis will drive economic activity, attract investments, and create thousands of jobs. It’s designed to serve as a hub for agro-export, cargo handling, and future industrial growth.”
Pioneering Technology and Regulatory Excellence
The Gateway Airport is setting new standards in aviation infrastructure, becoming the first Nigerian airport to secure an Operating Permit under the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations (NCARs 2023). This new regulatory benchmark ensures higher safety and operational standards than the previously used Aerodrome Permit.
Highlighting the technological advancements, Olumide noted: “The Gateway Airport is equipped with Doppler VOR and ADS-B systems for enhanced navigation and operational efficiency. It’s also Nigeria’s first solar-powered airport, aligning with global sustainability practices.”
Infrastructure Ready for Expansion
The airport’s 4-kilometer runway—the best in Nigeria—can accommodate the world’s largest commercial aircraft. Key facilities like the control tower, fire stations, and administrative buildings are fully operational, with the main terminal slated for completion in January 2025.
According to Ogun State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Ade Akinsanya, the project is 95% complete: “We’ve successfully completed two phases of the certification process with strong support from the NCAA. Full commercial operations will begin after final regulatory approval.”
The Aerotropolis Blueprint
The Gateway Airport’s long-term vision includes residential estates, hotels, industrial parks, and commercial centers, creating a self-sustaining economic ecosystem.
“Airports around the world evolve, and Gateway Airport will be no different,” Olumide said. “From Hajj operations to industrial logistics, this facility is designed to meet specialized needs while driving trade and travel.”
Tackling Challenges for Sustained Growth:
Despite challenges like limited network connectivity, the state government has implemented temporary measures, including a mobile control tower and on-site staff accommodations. A 12-kilometer perimeter fence enhances security and ensures compliance with regulatory standards.
