A Bold Plan for Nigerian Airlines
The Fly Nigeria Act seeks to give Nigerian airlines a competitive edge by making it mandatory for all government-funded air travel involving personnel, contractors, and property to prioritize local carriers.
This move aims to level the playing field in an industry dominated by foreign airlines.
At a stakeholders’ engagement in Abuja, Keyamo expressed frustration that the bill, originally proposed over 15 years ago under Chief Babatunde Omotoba’s tenure, had yet to be implemented. He vowed to rally support from all quarters to see it through.
“This has been on the cards for far too long,” Keyamo said. “We must break the cycle of global aviation politics that stifles our indigenous market. It’s time for Nigerian airlines to rise and compete fairly.”
Aviation Politics and Global Conspiracies
Keyamo didn’t shy away from addressing the systemic challenges facing Nigeria’s aviation industry. He criticized what he called a “global conspiracy” to suppress African airlines while foreign carriers thrive on the continent.
“Look at airlines like Air France, Lufthansa, and Delta,” he noted. “They come here full and leave full, with Nigerians on both sides of the journey. Meanwhile, our own carriers are struggling to survive. This is no coincidence—it’s aero politics at work.”
Stakeholders Back the Initiative
The renewed push for the Fly Nigeria Act has garnered significant support. Dr. Allen Onyema, Chairman of Air Peace, described the initiative as a turning point for the industry.
Professor Obiora Okonkwo, Chairman of United Nigeria Airline, echoed similar sentiments, calling the bill a chance to rejuvenate local carriers.
Former Minister Omotoba commended Keyamo’s drive, saying, “This is the kind of leadership our aviation sector needs—someone willing to take bold steps for lasting change.”
The bill also received input from Olisa Agbakoba Legal, which presented a framework titled A Proposal on Aviation Reform by Enacting The Fly Nigeria Act.
Creating Opportunities for Growth
Keyamo outlined how the bill would create new opportunities for Nigerian airlines by requiring government agencies to use local carriers, even on connecting flights. He also highlighted the potential impact on Hajj operations, where foreign airlines currently dominate.
“With this bill, our Hajj pilgrims must first use Nigerian carriers before considering foreign airlines,” he said. “We are creating a market where our airlines can grow and expand their routes.”

He expressed confidence in its swift passage, citing support from lawmakers and stakeholders alike.
“We’re in business already,” Keyamo said. “Once this becomes law, Nigerian airlines will have the backing they need to thrive in both local and international markets.”
