Plans to build a new airport in the fast-growing Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos have gained momentum, as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) held crucial talks on the project’s commencement.
The proposed Ibeju-Lekki Airport, which has been in the works for over a decade, is seen as a major infrastructure boost that will relieve pressure on the overcrowded Murtala Muhammed International Airport and support the state’s rapid economic growth.
During a high-level meeting with NCAA officials, Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed Lagos State’s commitment to the project, describing it as a vital part of the state’s long-term transport master plan.
The Governor noted that the idea for an additional airport was first conceived in 2007, and a feasibility study conducted in 2008 confirmed its viability. However, various delays stalled progress.
“Given the rapid development in Ibeju-Lekki and the growing industrial presence in the area, the time is right to push this project forward,” said Governor Sanwo-Olu. “This airport is critical to supporting the region’s economic expansion, and it will help decongest the existing airport while making Lagos an even more attractive destination for investment.”
The Ibeju-Lekki corridor, home to the Lekki Free Trade Zone and the Dangote Refinery, is fast becoming an industrial powerhouse, and the proposed airport is expected to play a key role in supporting this growth by facilitating both passenger and cargo transportation.
The NCAA, led by Acting Director-General Captain Chris Najomo, expressed full support for the project. However, the authority pointed out that Lagos State must submit an official declaration of intent for the airport, as required under Nigerian aviation regulations.
The declaration, which must be filed at least 180 days before construction begins, will allow the NCAA to provide technical guidance and ensure the project complies with all necessary standards.
“We are ready to work closely with Lagos State to ensure that this airport meets all regulatory requirements and is completed to the highest standards,” Captain Najomo stated. “This project aligns with the federal government’s ease of doing business policy, and we are committed to helping it move forward.”
Sanwo-Olu also revealed that 4,000 hectares of land have been set aside for the airport’s development in Ibeju-Lekki. The new facility is expected to serve as a major transportation hub, further enhancing Lagos’ status as a key economic gateway in West Africa.
The Governor highlighted that the airport will complement ongoing infrastructure projects in the region, including the planned expansion of road networks and other transport links to support Lagos’ bustling economy.
With regulatory backing and land secured, the Ibeju-Lekki Airport project is poised to reshape the landscape of Lagos’ eastern region, providing new opportunities for trade, investment, and tourism. It is expected to be a major driver of economic growth for both the state and Nigeria as a whole.
While a specific timeline for construction has yet to be announced, the meeting between Lagos State and the NCAA signals that the long-awaited project is finally moving forward, much to the excitement of industry stakeholders and residents alike.
