NSIB Investigates Jigawa Tanker Explosion, Over 150 Killed

Date:

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched an investigation into a tragic petrol tanker explosion that occurred in Majia town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, on Tuesday, October 16, 2024.

The explosion claimed the lives of over 150 people and left many others severely injured.

The incident reportedly happened around 11 p.m. on Tuesday when a petrol tanker, traveling from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State, lost control and crashed.

As the tanker spilled its contents, residents rushed to the scene to scoop the leaking fuel.

Unfortunately, the tanker exploded, igniting a massive fire that claimed numerous lives.

In a statement issued by Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance at the NSIB, it was confirmed that the bureau has deployed a team of experts to investigate the accident. “In line with our mandate to investigate accidents across all transportation sectors, the NSIB has dispatched a go-team to assess the circumstances surrounding the crash and explosion, with the aim of identifying the causes and recommending safety measures to prevent future incidents.”

Captain Alex Badeh Jr., Director General of the NSIB, expressed condolences to the families affected by the devastating event. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families impacted by this tragedy.

The NSIB is committed to uncovering the cause of the explosion and ensuring that safety lessons are learned,” he said.

As the investigation progresses, the NSIB will continue to provide updates on its findings and recommendations.

In the meantime, citizens are being reminded of the significant dangers posed by fuel scooping at accident scenes.

Authorities urge the public to avoid such practices, which can lead to devastating consequences.

The bureau has promised a thorough investigation, with hopes that the findings will lead to stricter safety regulations and raise awareness about the risks associated with tanker accidents.
