The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) is set to partner with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to enhance training and retraining programs for its workforce, in a move aimed at bolstering Nigeria’s aviation sector and ensuring adherence to global safety standards.
The Acting Director General of NCAA, Captain Chris Najomo, disclosed this development during a strategic meeting held on October 14, 2024, at the NCAA Headquarters in Abuja. The meeting was attended by a high-level IATA delegation led by its Regional Vice President for Africa and the Middle East, Mr. Kamil H. Al-Awadhi.
During the discussions, both organizations addressed key areas crucial to the NCAA’s mandate as a Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). Topics included compliance with international aviation regulations, cost-recovery measures, the management of operational costs such as ticketing and headcount, and the provision of specialized training for NCAA staff through both IATA and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
Najomo highlighted the importance of continuous professional development for the NCAA’s workforce to keep pace with the evolving aviation industry.
He emphasized that equipping staff with the latest industry knowledge and technical skills is essential for the NCAA to meet its regulatory obligations and maintain Nigeria’s status within the global aviation community.
“The success of our aviation industry depends not only on infrastructure but also on the quality of the people who oversee it. Through our partnership with IATA and ICAO, we aim to deliver world-class training to ensure that our personnel can meet and exceed global aviation standards,” Najomo said.
In response, Mr. Kamil Al-Awadhi commended the NCAA for its forward-thinking approach to workforce development. He reiterated IATA’s commitment to providing the NCAA with training programs designed to address current and future challenges within the aviation industry. Al-Awadhi expressed optimism that the collaboration would significantly enhance Nigeria’s aviation sector, making it more competitive and aligned with international best practices.
The partnership underscores the NCAA’s dedication to improving safety, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance across Nigeria’s aviation sector. It also highlights the vital role of strategic collaborations in driving innovation and sustainable growth within the industry.
As the NCAA moves forward with this partnership, both organizations will work closely to ensure that training programs are effectively implemented, providing NCAA staff with the knowledge and expertise needed to meet the demands of modern aviation operations.
This initiative is expected to elevate Nigeria’s aviation industry to new heights, ensuring that it remains a key player in the global aviation market.
