Breaking News: FAAN Activates Emergency Protocol as Fire Hits MMIA Terminal 1

Date:

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has activated its full-scale emergency response protocol following a fire outbreak at Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

The incident triggered a coordinated multi-agency response involving federal and state fire services, airport rescue teams, and private sector partners.

Firefighters successfully contained the blaze on the first and second floors of the terminal building, though plumes of smoke lingered as containment efforts continued.

In a situation update issued by FAAN, the authority confirmed that emergency response operations were ongoing, with structured evacuation procedures implemented to ensure passenger and staff safety.

To reinforce containment efforts, FAAN activated mutual aid agreements and requested support from the Lagos State Government, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, among other emergency bodies.

The swift collaboration underscores the airport authority’s emergency preparedness framework, designed to minimise risk and prevent loss of life during critical incidents.

Importantly, FAAN confirmed that no fatalities or injuries had been recorded as of the time of reporting.

“We wish to reassure the public that no loss of life has been recorded at this time, and all necessary measures are being taken to safeguard lives and property,” the authority stated.

While the immediate cause of the fire remains unknown, investigations are expected to commence once the area is fully secured and declared safe.

Industry observers note that although such incidents can disrupt flight operations and passenger movement, the effectiveness of the emergency response may help mitigate longer-term operational impacts.

FAAN assured stakeholders that further verified updates would be provided as the situation evolves.
