Nigeria’s flagship private carrier, Air Peace Limited, has recorded another milestone with the official launch of its maiden direct flight from Abuja to London Heathrow Airport, marking a significant leap in the country’s global aviation profile.
The colorful launch ceremony at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, drew key government dignitaries, industry stakeholders, and jubilant passengers.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, commended the achievement, highlighting the extensive diplomatic engagements that led to securing the Heathrow slot under Nigeria’s bilateral air services agreement.
He described the milestone as “a victory for Nigerian diplomacy and private enterprise,” reaffirming the government’s policy of supporting indigenous airlines on global routes.
Representing the Vice President, Deputy Chief of Staff Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia lauded Air Peace’s contribution to national pride, competition, and affordable travel options.
Similarly, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, applauded Dr. Onyema’s leadership, calling the launch “proof that when government clears the runway, the private sector takes flight.”
In his remarks, Onyema expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Aviation Minister, and all supporting agencies.
He noted that the Abuja–Heathrow service would enhance Nigeria’s global accessibility and strengthen the nation’s aviation standing.
“This milestone reflects what Nigerian entrepreneurs can achieve with the right environment,” Onyema said. “Heathrow’s network across Europe, the Americas, and the Caribbean will now be within the reach of more Nigerians.”
The new route, effective October 26, 2025, makes Air Peace the first Nigerian airline to operate direct flights between Abuja and London’s premier airport.
Following the success of its Lagos–London Gatwick route launched in March 2024, the carrier continues to consolidate its status as West and Central Africa’s largest airline by fleet and coverage.
The Abuja–Heathrow launch is more than an aviation event it is a statement of Nigeria’s readiness for deeper global integration through its homegrown carriers.
