Nigeria has once again taken the lead in regional aviation cooperation as the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) plays host to the sixth session of the Steering Committee for the Cooperative Development of Aeronautical Meteorology Services Project in the Africa-Indian Ocean Region, also known as CODEVMET-AFI.
The three-day session, which began on October 6 in Abuja, is being held under the auspices of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and brings together aviation and meteorology experts from across Africa to strengthen the framework for safer, weather-informed air navigation in the region.
Representing the Director-General of Civil Aviation, Capt. Chris Najomo, at the opening ceremony, the Director of Aerodrome and Airspace Standards, Engr. Godwin Balang, described the meeting as a timely convergence of minds dedicated to improving aviation weather services. He lauded ICAO’s leadership and expressed optimism that the outcomes of the Abuja session would further enhance cooperation among member states in the Africa-Indian Ocean (AFI) bloc.
“This forum reinforces our shared commitment to safer skies through innovation, capacity building, and stronger regional partnerships,” Balang stated.
The Abuja meeting has drawn participation from representatives of ICAO’s WACAF and ESAF regional offices, officials of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), and delegates from Togo, Kenya, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Angola, Tanzania, Sierra Leone, and ASECNA, among others.
As discussions continue, stakeholders are expected to explore strategies for improving meteorological data sharing, capacity enhancement, and the integration of modern technologies to support flight operations across the region.
With Nigeria hosting this crucial event, the NCAA underscores its growing leadership role in driving aviation safety and collaboration across Africa’s skies.
