NAFSA Hails FAAN MD Olubunmi Kuku’s Transformational Leadership

Date:

The Nigerian Aviation Fire and Safety Association (NAFSA) have commended the Managing Director/Chief Executive of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, for her visionary leadership and the unprecedented transformation of firefighting operations and safety management within the Nigerian aviation industry.

Barely a year after the inauguration of NAFSA’s National Leadership, the appointment of Mrs. Kuku proved to be a game-changing moment, sparking a wave of progressive developments that are now being celebrated across the aviation sector.

The first meeting between the Association and Mrs. Kuku in January 2024 marked a major turning point in the history of NAFSA. The engagement, described as epoch-making, laid the foundation for a series of collaborative initiatives that have significantly improved the working conditions, welfare, training, and safety practices of FAAN Firefighters.

According to Comrade Ugbeikwu Sunday, the National President of NAFSA, the impact of Mrs. Kuku’s leadership is unprecedented. He noted that in nearly 30 years of the Association’s existence, it has never experienced such developmental strides. He described Mrs. Kuku as a private sector expert who has brought her extensive experience and a results-driven approach to FAAN, with visible outcomes that speak for themselves.

Under her watch, the health and well-being of FAAN Firefighters have taken center stage. Annual cancer awareness programs and comprehensive medical check-ups have become a standard feature, demonstrating a strong institutional commitment to the health of personnel.

The ongoing Annual Firefighters Medical Certification Exercise, which is being carried out across Nigeria’s airports, further underscores her belief that only a healthy workforce can deliver optimal performance. Mrs. Kuku herself stated, “I will take seriously the health of my workforce because only a healthy workforce can guarantee a productive workforce.”

Another groundbreaking shift is in the area of training and professional development. Previously, Firefighters often attended trainings without receiving their due allowances, leading to significant morale issues. That practice has now changed. Mrs. Kuku has institutionalized a process whereby training allowances are paid in full before training invitations are even issued. This has ensured that Firefighters are better focused, more motivated, and no longer burdened by financial stress when attending capacity-building sessions.

In addition, her leadership facilitated a critical shift in competency training for Firefighters, moving it from Douala, Cameroon, to the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria. Through this move, FAAN Firefighters now benefit from access to the state-of-the-art Multipurpose Aircraft Fire Simulator at NCAT, ensuring they receive high-quality, practical training within Nigeria.

Kuku also reversed a controversial redeployment policy that had caused uncertainty among Firefighters. The temporary transfer of personnel to Enugu and Port Harcourt Airports had left 13 other airports understaffed and was eventually made permanent without due consultation.

Following sustained engagement and constructive criticism from NAFSA, she intervened and reversed the decision, allowing Firefighters to return to their original duty stations and restoring a sense of job security and workplace stability.

Strategic collaboration has also been a cornerstone of her administration. Her partnership with NCAT has revived professional training prospects and created new pathways for growth within the sector. Before this collaboration, Firefighters were uncertain about future training opportunities, especially after access to Douala’s training facilities became impractical. Her engagement with NCAT in May 2024 directly led to renewed training programs and capacity-building opportunities that are now active, vibrant, and fully localized.

The FAAN Boss commitment to safety is further demonstrated by her bold decision to renovate the aging terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos. Built over 40 years ago, the terminal had long been flagged by NAFSA as a safety concern due to compromised infrastructure. Mrs. Kuku’s willingness to undertake the much-needed renovation reflects her prioritization of passenger safety, operational efficiency, and global best practices.

Perhaps the most celebrated milestone was the 2025 Management Promotion exercise the largest in FAAN’s history. For the first time, approximately 125 Firefighters were promoted from Grade Level 14 to 15, a feat NAFSA describes as extraordinary and symbolic of the goodwill that Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku has shown toward the firefighting profession.

While promotion is not a guaranteed right, her fairness and commitment to rewarding competence and experience made the 2025 exercise a landmark achievement in staff motivation and institutional trust-building.

Reflecting on these developments, Comrade Ugbeikwu Sunday expressed deep appreciation for Mrs. Kuku’s support, describing her as “the backbone of NAFSA.” He emphasized that without her strategic guidance, support, and cooperation, the Association’s executive leadership would have found it difficult to achieve the level of success it has recorded in recent times. “She is phenomenal,” he said. “She understands and prioritizes safety and that made our job easy for us.”

The string of achievements under Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku’s leadership is a testament to what focused, strategic leadership can accomplish when combined with genuine stakeholder engagement and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

NAFSA’s partnership with FAAN has reached new heights, and the results ranging from improved working conditions and world-class training to enhanced safety infrastructure have set a new benchmark in the aviation industry. Mrs. Kuku’s transformational leadership has not only impacted the lives and careers of Firefighters but has also redefined the future of aviation safety in Nigeria.
