Weather Delays: NCAA Offers Support and Oversight to Passengers

Date:

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has reaffirmed its commitment to passenger welfare with swift and humane actions during a recent flight disruption caused by adverse weather conditions.

This remarkable intervention was led by Mr. Chris Achimugu, the NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, who was present at the airport on personal travel.

When Mr. Achimugu encountered frustrated passengers stranded due to the weather, he took immediate action to address the growing tension. Spending over 20 minutes engaging with the passengers, he explained the airline’s non-liability under force majeure conditions and assured them that the NCAA would verify the weather claims with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET).

Recognizing the passengers’ hardship, Mr. Achimugu went above and beyond by arranging transportation back to the Central Area and personally covering the cost of accommodations at Peace Media Hotel for elderly passengers who appeared particularly vulnerable after the extended delay.

In a bid to alleviate the financial strain on travelers, the airline also agreed to provide 50% compensation to affected passengers, with an option for immediate cash redemption. Refunds were processed for those who chose to cancel their journeys entirely.

Further solidifying the NCAA’s dedication to consumer protection, Mr. Achimugu introduced passengers to the agency’s QR code system for filing complaints and assured them of prompt resolutions by the next day.

This proactive approach follows the NCAA’s recent enforcement actions against five airlines, marking the first such initiative in over a decade. These measures underscore the agency’s determination to hold airlines accountable and improve overall service standards.

He  also revealed additional reforms, including daily weather reports from NiMet to his office to ensure airlines’ claims are substantiated.

Meanwhile, the NCAA’s Director-General, Capt. Chris Najomo, has announced plans to engage with domestic airline CEOs to address broader industry challenges.

The NCAA’s efforts have been bolstered by the leadership of the Honourable Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, whose initiatives include equipping sunset airports with modern instrument landing systems and addressing long-standing capacity issues.

In a heartwarming gesture,  Achimugu shared how he personally assisted indigent passengers in obtaining refunds from a struggling airline, further demonstrating the NCAA’s empathetic approach under its current leadership.

Achimugu appealed for passengers’ patience, emphasizing that while systemic transformation takes time, significant strides are already being made.

Through these bold and compassionate steps, the NCAA is setting a new benchmark for consumer protection in the Nigerian aviation sector; ensuring passengers receive the care, respect, and accountability they deserve.
