The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) have formalized a partnership through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to improve climate-smart information and standard meteorological services across Nigeria’s 36 states.
The MoU, signed on Wednesday in Abuja, aims to enhance collaboration in sectors such as agriculture, telecommunications, aviation, marine, oil and gas, mining, disaster management, and more.
NiMet’s Director General and CEO, Prof. Charles Anosike, expressed gratitude to the governors and NGF leadership, including the Chairman, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, and the NGF Director General, Alhaji Abdulateef O.T. Shittu. “This partnership is critical for scaling access to weather information, which supports not just farmers but also aviation and state infrastructure management,” Anosike stated.
He also announced that the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, has approved February 4, 2025, for the public unveiling of the 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP).
Prof. Anosike emphasized the importance of state governments’ collaboration in implementing downscaled weather predictions and described the MoU as a milestone achievement for NiMet.
Responding, NGF Director General, Alhaji Abdulateef Shittu, praised NiMet for its decade-long contributions to the states. “This formal agreement strengthens our longstanding relationship and enables both agencies to work jointly in providing meteorological and climatological data. Together, we aim to develop climate change indices and address the environmental challenges impacting states and communities,” he remarked.
This collaboration reinforces NiMet’s role as a vital partner in Nigeria’s socio-economic development. It ensures that critical weather and climate information supports resilience and informed decision-making across all sectors.
