The Aviation Safety Round Table Initiative (ASRTI/ART) strongly disapproves of the recent arbitrary increase in fees and charges by aviation ground handling companies, describing the move as detrimental to the aviation sector.
In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Albinus Chiedu, ART condemned the imposition of what it termed “outrageously high handling fees,” especially at a time when stakeholders are advocating for government intervention to reduce airline operating costs, lower air ticket prices, and support the survival of Nigerian airlines.
“This astronomical increase negates the spirit of taming inflation in the aviation sector. It is capable of further reducing passenger patronage and could compromise safety in the sector,” the statement read.
ART noted that the move undermines ongoing efforts to address challenges within the aviation industry, including the impact of high operating costs on ticket affordability and the financial health of Nigerian airlines.
The group urged an immediate reversal of the increment and called for a conciliatory tripartite meeting involving ground handling companies, airlines, and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).
The objective of the meeting, ART emphasised, would be to establish acceptable and fair charges for all parties involved.
“The ART is committed to fostering dialogue and achieving a balanced resolution that ensures the sustainability of the aviation industry while protecting the interests of all stakeholders,” Chiedu added.
This development has sparked widespread concern among industry stakeholders, with many emphasising the need for collaborative solutions to stabilize the aviation sector and enhance its contribution to the nation’s economy.
