The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has commenced preparations for the public unveiling of the 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP), scheduled for the first quarter of next year.
The SCP is a critical tool providing insight into upcoming seasonal weather patterns to help mitigate climate risks, support adaptive measures for livelihoods, and promote food security.
This prediction aligns with the United Nations’ Early Warning for All (EW4ALL) initiative, championed by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
The SCP forecast is developed through a meticulous scientific process involving global and regional models and other atmospheric drivers strongly connected to Nigeria’s climate. It provides invaluable information for policymakers, planners, and stakeholders across both public and private sectors, especially in weather-sensitive industries such as agriculture, aviation, construction, water resources, health, trade, and tourism.
To ensure the success of the 2025 SCP, NiMet has expanded its dedicated Task Team. This team recently inducted and trained new members as part of its preparatory activities.
Speaking at the induction and training session held in Abuja, Haruna Zakari, the Task Team Coordinator and Technical Assistant to the Director-General/CEO of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, emphasized the importance of the team’s work. He described the SCP as a document of national significance and highlighted the high expectations placed on the team.
“The DG/CEO of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, trusts that the carefully selected Task Team will demonstrate professionalism, dedication, and commitment to delivering a noteworthy document within the projected timeline,” Zakari said.
He further stressed the SCP’s critical role in providing early warnings to bolster Nigeria’s economic resilience and sustainability. The induction and training session aimed to fully integrate new members into the team, ensuring a seamless process leading to the completion of the SCP draft and its eventual unveiling.
Through the SCP, NiMet continues to enhance Nigeria’s preparedness for seasonal climatic variations, enabling stakeholders to make informed decisions that safeguard lives, livelihoods, and infrastructure. This initiative underscores NiMet’s pivotal role in supporting sustainable development and economic stability in the face of a changing climate.
