The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has concluded a significant eight-yearly re-accreditation visit to the Regional Training Centre (RTC) of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) in Oshodi, Lagos, applauding the institution for its innovation and commitment to global standards.
Led by Dr. Paul Bugeac, Coordinator of Learning and Development at the WMO Education and Training Office, the five-day evaluation highlighted the strides made by RTC in transforming its operations and infrastructure.
Dr. Bugeac, speaking at the review meeting, praised the improvements since the last assessment; “In the past, there were major concerns about RTC, but what I see today is impressive. From improved hostel maintenance to uninterrupted solar-powered electricity, RTC has set a benchmark. The innovative courses and dedication of the staff are exemplary. Nigeria’s RTC will now serve as a model for others worldwide,” he stated.
He emphasised the need for timely submission of pending documents to finalize the re-accreditation process and present the findings at the WMO Executive Council meeting in June 2025.
Professor Charles Anosike, Director-General/CEO of NiMet and Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to WMO, expressed gratitude for WMO’s recognition of the agency’s efforts; “This acknowledgment is a testament to the dedication of our team. With just documentation left for re-accreditation, we are closer to cementing our global standing. NiMet is not only accredited internationally but also recognized nationally by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to offer diploma courses.”
Anosike credited the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN, for his unwavering support:
“The Honourable Minister understands the pivotal role of meteorology in aviation safety. His engagement with the WMO Secretary-General in Geneva reflects his commitment to advancing this institution.”
During the visit, WMO officials inspected the RTC’s state-of-the-art facilities, including solar-powered buildings, modern training equipment, and enhanced student accommodations. Dr. Bugeac assured continued collaboration, emphasizing that RTC Nigeria’s progress would inspire other nations.
The Honourable Minister of Aviation, through Professor Anosike, extended his appreciation to WMO and reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to sustaining RTC as a global leader in meteorological education and training.
With its transformation and innovation, RTC Nigeria is positioned as a trailblazer in advancing meteorological education, ensuring safety in aviation, and fostering environmental resilience on a global scale.
