Emirates Airlines, owned by the Investment Corporation of Dubai, has officially resumed operations in Nigeria after a two-year hiatus, confirming its long-term commitment to the country. The announcement came during an exclusive reception held to celebrate the airline’s inaugural flight to Lagos, attended by top officials from Emirates and the Nigerian aviation sector.
The historic flight, a Boeing 777/300 (EK 703), landed at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, at 15:20, marking the airline’s return to one of its key African markets. Leading the Emirates delegation was Adil Al Ghaith, Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations, Gulf, Middle East, and Central Asia, alongside other senior executives, including David Broz, Senior Vice President of Aeropolitical and Airline Industry Affairs; Sami Aqil Abdullah, Senior Vice President of Emirates Airport Services, Outstation and Business Support; and Paulos Legesse, Country Manager, Nigeria.
The Nigerian delegation, led by the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN CON FCIarb (UK), included prominent figures such as Capt. Chris Ona Najomo, Acting Director General of the NCAA; Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, Managing Director of FAAN; and Capt. Alex Badeh Jr., Director General of the NSIB.
During his address, Adil Al Ghaith expressed enthusiasm about Emirates’ return, stating, “Nigeria has always been one of our most important markets, with 14 weekly flights to and from Lagos and 7 to Abuja before the hiatus. We are delighted to be back, and this time, we are back for good.” He emphasized the strong ties between the UAE and Nigeria, thanking Nigerian authorities for their support in facilitating the airline’s return.
In his response, Minister Festus Keyamo welcomed Emirates’ return, humorously likening it to a couple rekindling a relationship. “Nigeria, as Africa’s largest economy with the most traveled population, must be a priority for Emirates. Our potential to become the continent’s aviation hub makes this partnership essential,” he remarked. The Minister also highlighted the broader business opportunities between Nigeria and the UAE that extend beyond the resumption of flights.
Tunde Moshood, Special Adviser, Media and Communications to the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, emphasized the importance of Emirates’ return. “The resumption of Emirates’ flights to Nigeria is a significant milestone that will enhance our connectivity to the world and boost the aviation industry. This partnership symbolizes a long-term commitment to growth and collaboration between Nigeria and the UAE,” Moshood said.
The event, held at the Legend Hotel’s conference hall and organized by Dr. Phil Osagie of JSP Communications on behalf of Emirates Airlines, culminated with a ceremonial cake-cutting and the exchange of gifts, symbolizing the renewed partnership between Emirates Airlines and Nigerian aviation authorities.
Emirates’ return to Nigeria marks the beginning of a new chapter, with the airline committed to expanding its presence and strengthening its collaboration with Nigerian aviation stakeholders.
