United Nigeria Airlines and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) have moved to deepen operational ties following a strategic meeting in Lagos focused on safety, infrastructure, and capacity development.
The engagement brought together the airline’s Chairman, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, OFR, and FAAN’s Managing Director/CEO, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, alongside senior management teams from both organisations.
A major highlight of the talks was the growing concern over bird strikes, which United Nigeria Airlines described as a significant safety and cost challenge.
The airline also pointed to operational constraints at sunrise-to-sunset airports and the condition of Category II facilities, arguing that limited operating hours and infrastructure gaps continue to impact schedule reliability.
The issue of unruly passenger behaviour also featured prominently, with calls for firmer regulatory enforcement to protect aviation personnel and travellers.
In a move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s aviation ecosystem, the airline sought land allocation in Abuja for the establishment of a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility a project expected to enhance in-country aircraft servicing capacity and reduce capital flight.
FAAN, in its response, reaffirmed its commitment to improving airport safety standards. Mrs. Kuku disclosed that the authority has identified root environmental causes of bird strikes and has commenced targeted interventions, including better habitat management within airport vicinities.
She further revealed that FAAN is upgrading airfield lighting systems at Category II airports to enable longer operational hours. Works are underway in Benin, while Jos Airport is scheduled for lighting enhancements.
The agency also pledged tougher action against disruptive passengers and signalled openness to expediting the proposed MRO land request in Abuja.
United Nigeria Airlines’ Executive Director/COO, Osita Okonkwo, described the meeting as timely, stressing that closer coordination between airlines and airport authorities is essential to sustaining safety and industry growth.
