…urges Deeper Industry Collaboration for Sector Growth

The Chairman of the League of Airports and Aviation Correspondents (LAAC), Mr. Idris Suleiman Aloma, has declared a renewed era of professionalism and sector-wide collaboration as the 2025 Annual LAAC Training Course officially commenced at the Nigeria College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria.

In a stirring opening address, Mr. Aloma emphasised that the return of the training to NCAT after a two-year interlude at another institution marks more than a change in venue — it signals a

“homecoming” to quality, capacity building, and a reaffirmation of the League’s commitment to deepening journalistic excellence within the aviation sector.

“I affirm here that NCAT is not doing badly at all. That’s why we are happy to be here this year, and I say to my fellow colleagues — WELCOME BACK HOME.”

Highlighting the evolving global aviation landscape, the LAAC Chairman noted that the industry has weathered turbulent economic conditions, from fluctuating airline patronage to deferred aircraft deliveries. Nevertheless, Nigeria’s aviation sector continues to demonstrate resilience.

He pointed to the recent surge in domestic airlines receiving Air Operator Certificates (AOCs) from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), a clear indication that progress is being made despite mounting operational challenges.

“These and other developments call for more training in the sector,” Aloma noted, “and they represent more opportunities for NCAT to harvest the ripe field of training adventures in the industry.”

He urged stakeholders and aviation authorities to stay committed to the sector’s development, describing the current period as critical for national aviation growth.

“We live in a time when aviation is undergoing rapid transformation driven by technology, sustainability goals, safety imperatives, and an increasingly interconnected world,” he said.

Midway through his address, Mr. Aloma extended appreciation to key figures in the industry whose roles continue to shape the nation’s aviation narrative.

He specifically acknowledged the Honourable Minister of Aviation & Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo (SAN); the Director General of NCAA, Captain Chris Ona Najomo (also fondly known as “Jolly Papa”); and the Rector and Chief Executive Officer of NCAT, Dr. Danjuma Adamu Ismaila.

Their roles, he said, have been instrumental in ensuring the continuity and relevance of the LAAC training programme.

He also recognized the support of the excellent NCAT management and faculty, as well as respected communications strategist and journalist, Mr. Tayo Ajakaye of NAHCO Aviance.

Reflecting on the significant impact of previous LAAC trainings, Aloma emphasised the growth in journalistic quality and understanding among aviation reporters.

He stressed the vital role correspondents play in bridging the gap between the industry and the public, asserting that journalists must go beyond reporting headlines to grasp technical, policy, and safety dynamics that define the aviation space.

“The insights you gain here will not only enrich your reporting but also enhance public understanding and confidence in our aviation systems,” he told participants.

In closing, Aloma expressed gratitude for the improvements observed within NCAT, even as he called for continued infrastructural enhancement.

He encouraged all participants to engage with open minds, uphold discipline, and seize the opportunity for professional development during the week-long training.

“I commend NCAT for this important initiative and extend my best wishes for a successful and impactful training program,” he concluded.

As LAAC reinforces its partnership with NCAT and the larger aviation ecosystem, this year’s training course is already shaping up to be a transformative experience, one that promises to elevate both journalistic excellence and sector development in tandem.
