The Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu has been temporarily shut down by the Federal Government of Nigeria for emergency repairs following a sudden rupture in a critical section of the runway.
According to a statement released on Friday, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirmed that the closure will take effect from April 22nd to May 6th, 2025, to allow for urgent rehabilitation works on the affected section of the runway.
The Director of Public Affairs & Consumer Protection and spokesperson for FAAN, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, explained that the decision was made in strict compliance with Nigerian civil aviation regulations.
She emphasised that the safety of passengers remains a top priority, and as such, the runway will not be open for any aircraft operations, landings or takeoffs during the repair period.
“All flights scheduled to land at Akanu Ibiam International Airport will be redirected to nearby airports,” Orah stated. “We appeal to all airport users and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation as we undertake this necessary intervention to ensure safety and maintain facility standards.”
She also expressed regret over the late and unexpected notice, assuring the public that FAAN is committed to providing safe skies, secure airports, and seamless travel experiences.
The airport, which serves as a major gateway to the South-East region, is expected to resume full operations once the repairs are completed on May 6th.
