The Nigerian aviation industry is undergoing a significant transformation through strategic partnerships, policy reforms, and infrastructural advancements, as highlighted at the Stakeholders’ Engagement on Transforming the Aviation Industry through Strategic Partnerships: Advancing Airport Sustainable Development held in Lagos.
The event underscored the crucial role of collaboration between regulatory bodies, industry operators, trade unions, and investors in fostering a globally competitive and sustainable aviation sector.
The Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Captain Chris Najomo, in his goodwill message, reiterated the agency’s commitment to improving operational efficiency, enhancing safety and security, and boosting passenger confidence in alignment with the Honourable Minister’s Five-Point Agenda.
The NCAA has made significant strides in aviation infrastructure, including the commissioning of long-abandoned regional offices in Port Harcourt and Kano, ensuring efficient regulatory oversight across various regional centers. Moreover, through collaborative efforts with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Nigeria has progressed in the implementation of its Civil Aviation Master Plan (CAMP), aimed at bolstering strategic development and modernization of the industry.
From a regulatory perspective, digital transformation remains a top priority, with the introduction of electronic regulatory tools such as the CPD and DATR portals. These innovations are streamlining licensing, permit issuance, and certification processes, fostering transparency and efficiency in service delivery.
Safety remains at the forefront of aviation development in Nigeria. The NCAA, in collaboration with the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, inaugurated the National Executive Safety Committee (NESC) to oversee the implementation of Nigeria’s State Safety Programme (SSP). The establishment of the NCAA Flight Data Centre and adoption of new performance-based surveillance methodologies further demonstrate Nigeria’s commitment to global safety standards.
The industry has also witnessed notable consumer protection initiatives, including efforts to regulate high airfare costs, reduce route monopolies, and enhance indigenous airline participation in foreign routes. A prime example is the successful launch of Air Peace’s Lagos-London route, which underscores the drive toward market competitiveness.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, reinforced FAAN’s dedication to upgrading airport infrastructure and ensuring seamless passenger experiences.
Key developments include increased efforts in runway de-rubberization, friction testing, and wildlife management to mitigate bird strikes and improve operational safety. Security has also been strengthened with the deployment of advanced explosive detection screening devices and the training of over 3,000 aviation security personnel.
Additionally, over 3,238 personnel, including operators and handlers, have been trained in aviation safety measures.
Infrastructure upgrades remain a focal point, with the completion of hajj terminal rehabilitations in Kaduna, Ilorin, Maiduguri, Yola, Abuja, Katsina, and Kano, while ongoing projects continue in Sokoto, Gombe, and Lagos. Power supply at major airports has been enhanced with upgraded power panels and dedicated power lines in Lagos, Enugu, Kano, and Abuja, ensuring more stable electricity for operations. Furthermore, enhanced terminal facilities aim to improve passenger comfort, and technological advancements such as Wi-Fi deployment at Lagos International Airport are enhancing passenger convenience.
Both the NCAA and FAAN reaffirm their unwavering commitment to building a resilient, globally competitive aviation sector that aligns with Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda. As stakeholders continue to work in synergy, the nation’s aviation industry is poised to soar to unprecedented heights, driving economic growth and global integration.
