A quarter-century after its inception, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) stands as a pillar of the nation’s aviation industry, shaping policies, ensuring safety, and driving innovation.
The agency marked its 25th anniversary with a grand celebration in Abuja, where industry leaders, government officials, and aviation stakeholders gathered to reflect on its achievements and chart the course for the future.
In his keynote address, the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, praised the NCAA’s resilience and contributions to Nigeria’s aviation sector. He highlighted the authority’s remarkable journey since its establishment in 1999 and commencement of operations in 2000, emphasizing its role in setting regulatory standards, overseeing air traffic management, expanding airport infrastructure, and fostering the growth of indigenous airlines.
Despite facing challenges over the years, the NCAA has thrived with the support of successive administrations and key stakeholders. Keyamo credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for further strengthening the sector, ensuring that aviation remains a driver of economic growth and national development. He also acknowledged the collaboration between aviation agencies, private sector players, and international bodies in sustaining industry progress.
The silver jubilee celebration provided an opportunity to honor individuals who have played instrumental roles in advancing Nigeria’s aviation sector. Awards were presented to outstanding contributors whose dedication has shaped the industry. The minister congratulated the recipients, encouraging them to inspire others through their commitment to excellence and public service.
Keyamo stressed the aviation industry’s critical role in Nigeria’s economy, noting that while its full potential in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) contribution is yet to be realized, continuous investment in infrastructure, technology, and human capital development will drive future growth, emphasising the need for innovation, safety enhancements, and sustainability in air travel.
Reflecting on the NCAA’s journey, Keyamo revealed that there had been attempts in past administrations to merge the NCAA with the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA). He explained how he successfully defended the agency’s independence during a policy review, ensuring its continued existence as a distinct regulatory body crucial for aviation safety and oversight.
One of the key highlights of his speech was the government’s commitment to aviation training and capacity development. Despite cost-cutting measures affecting foreign travel, Keyamo disclosed that President Tinubu had approved a special exemption allowing aviation professionals to continue essential overseas training.
This, he explained, underscores the government’s recognition of training as a non-negotiable element in maintaining safety and operational efficiency.
As the NCAA looks ahead, Keyamo reassured stakeholders of the government’s support for initiatives that will elevate the aviation sector.
He expressed gratitude to all who have contributed to the agency’s success and emphasized that the silver jubilee celebration should serve as a launchpad for even greater achievements.
In closing, he congratulated the newly appointed Director-General of the NCAA, expressing confidence in his leadership and the agency’s ability to meet global standards.
