FAAN Enhances Aircraft Marshaller Safety with New Revalidation Program

Date:

In a proactive move to reduce apron-related accidents and ensure safer ground operations during the Yuletide season, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has rolled out a comprehensive revalidation program for aircraft marshallers.

The initiative, under the leadership of Mrs. Olubunmi Oluwaseun Kuku, FAAN’s Managing Director, is being executed in collaboration with F.C.I International and the Centre of Technical Development.

The program aims to enhance the skills and competencies of over 200 aircraft marshallers from airports across the federation, equipping them with the necessary training to safely guide aircraft during ground movements and taxiing. The training is in line with the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority’s advisory circular NCAA-AC-ARD049, which governs airside safety management protocols.

During a training session at Port Harcourt International Airport, Dr. Emiola Olatubosun Luqman, FAAN’s Director of Human Resources, highlighted the importance of the initiative. He emphasized that FAAN is committed to closing any technical training gaps and reinforcing its capacity to provide secure air transport support services during the festive period and beyond.

Mr. Fortune Idu, the Managing Director of FCI International and coordinator of the training, underscored the uniqueness of this program, which goes beyond traditional marshalling signals.

According to Idu, the revalidation process now includes an assessment of all apron-related work hazards and introduces a new logging system designed to improve the efficiency of marshallers and enhance overall airfield safety. The program also involves a review of existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure they align with modern safety practices.

The aircraft marshallers who participated in the training expressed their gratitude for FAAN’s efforts in providing the necessary tools and resources to enhance their performance. They also advocated for broader career progression opportunities within FAAN, suggesting that more training avenues should be available for marshallers to develop professionally.

In response, Mr. Idu addressed the marshallers’ call for career advancement, sharing that FCI International has long advocated for the establishment of a Marshallers Consultative Body. This body, he explained, would foster professionalism and mutual respect among marshallers. Idu also revealed that he has presented this proposal to the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), with the support of the Acting Director General, Capt. Chris Najomo, who has endorsed the creation of the body.

Idu further stressed the importance of Capt. Najomo’s leadership in promoting an inclusive aviation development system in Nigeria.

He also advocated for Capt. Najomo’s confirmation as the substantive Director General of the NCAA to solidify these initiatives and ensure a solid foundation for the country’s aviation sector.

As FAAN continues its efforts to enhance safety measures across Nigerian airports, this training program marks a significant step towards reducing incidents on the apron and ensuring a smooth and safe festive season for travelers.
