The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has launched a nationwide roadshow to educate air travellers about their rights and responsibilities, beginning at General Aviation Terminal and Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2 (MMA2), Lagos.
The campaign aims to improve service delivery and operational efficiency in the aviation sector, especially during the festive travel season.
The roadshow, led by NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr. Michael Achimugu, is part of the authority’s efforts to foster a culture of accountability within the aviation industry.
Speaking at the event, Achimugu emphasised the need for passengers to understand their entitlements and obligations.
“This initiative ensures that passengers are well-informed and empowered to address issues professionally,” he said. “A harmonious relationship between airlines and travellers is essential for a better travel experience.”
The NCAA team engaged passengers at various terminals, including the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) and the international terminal, providing guidelines for smoother travel.
Achimugu stressed the importance of punctuality, reminding passengers to arrive at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international departures.
He also highlighted compensation rules for lost baggage: N10,000 for domestic flights and $170 for international routes.
Additionally, Achimugu warned against unruly behavior, urging passengers to report grievances through proper channels.
“Nigerians often claim ignorance of NCAA’s role in protecting their rights, but we are here for them. Our Consumer Protection Officers, stationed at 23 terminals nationwide, are ready to assist,” he noted.
The campaign, which began in Lagos, will extend to Port Harcourt on December 1 and other airports nationwide, ensuring greater outreach during the peak travel period.
Achimugu added, “With this campaign, passengers are not only aware of their rights but also their responsibilities, such as adhering to airline regulations and maintaining decorum.”
The roadshow is part of the NCAA’s broader strategy to enhance operational excellence and economic viability in the aviation sector.
It also serves as a precursor to the Consumer Protection National Stakeholders Summit, scheduled to take place at the NCAA Annex tomorrow.
By bridging the knowledge gap between airlines and passengers, the NCAA is setting the stage for a more efficient and passenger-friendly aviation industry.
Travellers can now look forward to improved transparency, accountability, and service delivery as the campaign rolls out nationwide.
