Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has issued a directive requiring foreign airlines operating in the country to source their on-board meals from local caterers.
This decision, aimed at boosting the domestic catering industry, was communicated through a letter to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), signed by H.T. Ejibunu, the director overseeing the office of the permanent secretary.
Dated October 15, 2024, the directive mandates that all outbound flights from Nigeria, particularly those operated by foreign airlines, must comply with the new regulation starting January 1, 2025.
“I am directed by the Honourable Minister of Aviation to convey to you his decision to mandate all outbound flights from Nigeria, especially foreign airlines, to patronize local caterers for on-board meals,” the ministry stated in the letter.
The NCAA has been instructed to ensure foreign airlines adhere to this policy, which is expected to provide significant opportunities for local businesses and improve the visibility of Nigerian cuisine on international flights.
The ministry emphasised that strict compliance is required from all airlines beginning January 2025.
This move is part of the government’s broader efforts to promote local industries and foster economic growth in the aviation sector.
