Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has successfully concluded a comprehensive training program on investigating multimodal transport accidents, marking a significant step in improving transportation safety across various sectors.

The training, which included participants from the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force, as well as NSIB officials, underscores the Bureau’s commitment to strengthening investigative capabilities in line with the strategic goals of the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo.

The program, led by global experts from renowned institutions such as Cranfield University and Buckinghamshire New University in the United Kingdom, and Nigeria’s Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), provided advanced skills and global best practices. This initiative was designed to equip NSIB personnel and military investigators with the necessary tools to enhance transport safety investigation in Nigeria.

Speaking about the program, Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance at NSIB, described the training as a “landmark achievement” for the Bureau. She emphasized that the training enhances NSIB’s ability to carry out complex investigations and implement preventive measures to improve safety standards. “The knowledge transfer between the military and our investigators ensures that the Bureau can handle even the most challenging investigations, ultimately helping to reduce future incidents and save lives,” she said.

The inclusion of military personnel from the Army, Navy, and Air Force alongside NSIB’s junior and senior investigators created a multidisciplinary learning environment, fostering cross-sectoral collaboration and a comprehensive approach to transportation safety. As Nigeria’s economy and infrastructure rapidly expand, the need for such cooperation becomes increasingly vital.

Captain Alex Badeh Jr., Director General of NSIB, emphasised the significance of the initiative. “This program aims not only to enhance our technical investigation skills but also to equip us to manage the growing complexity of Nigeria’s transportation infrastructure. By integrating military expertise and international best practices, we are building a safety culture that will serve all Nigerians,” he stated.

Badeh Jr. further highlighted that the training is aligned with NSIB’s strategic objectives to boost investigative efficiency, ensure transparency in safety reports, and proactively prevent future accidents through effective risk management recommendations. These goals mirror Mr. Keyamo’s broader vision for Nigeria’s aviation sector, which emphasizes modernizing safety protocols, building capacity, and raising safety standards to meet global benchmarks.

“The Honourable Minister’s vision is clear,” Badeh Jr. added. “He is committed to creating a safer, more efficient aviation industry. Through programs like this, we are ensuring that our investigators are equipped with the latest knowledge and skills to uphold the highest safety standards, contributing to the Minister’s efforts to modernize Nigeria’s transport safety framework.”

The outcomes of this training are expected to significantly improve NSIB’s ability to conduct thorough, impartial investigations across multiple modes of transport, ultimately contributing to the prevention of accidents and the protection of lives. This initiative also positions NSIB as a leading authority on transportation safety in Africa, with the Bureau aiming to establish Nigeria as a model for best practices in the region.

As Nigeria continues to develop its transport infrastructure, the NSIB’s role in ensuring the safety of these systems becomes increasingly critical. This training represents a major investment in human capital, ensuring that the Bureau is well-prepared to meet the safety challenges of Nigeria’s growing transportation sector.
