The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has imposed a ₦5 million fine on Qatar Airways for violating consumer protection regulations, in a move aimed at strengthening passenger rights and enforcing compliance within the aviation industry.
The sanction, announced on Tuesday by the NCAA’s spokesperson, Michael Achimugu, follows investigations that uncovered breaches capable of undermining consumer confidence and service quality.
Achimugu disclosed that Qatar Airways is also being examined for additional infractions. According to him, Letters of Investigation (LOIs) earlier issued to the airline could attract further penalties if the carrier fails to respond satisfactorily.
“The NCAA remains committed to protecting the rights of all stakeholders, especially passengers, and will continue to enforce regulations to ensure accountability in the aviation sector,” the agency stated.
Consumer advocacy organisations have praised the move, noting that such decisive regulatory action is necessary to uphold service standards across the industry.
Analysts believe the sanction, though modest for a global carrier of Qatar Airways’ size, sends a strong signal that Nigerian authorities will not tolerate non-compliance.
The regulator has taken similar actions in the past. Earlier this year, Kenya Airways was sanctioned over its handling of a Nigerian passenger, Gloria Omisore, who was stranded in Nairobi after being denied boarding due to visa issues.
Qatar Airways operates international routes to Lagos and Abuja and is widely regarded for its premium global service. However, the NCAA’s intervention underscores the importance of adhering to Nigeria’s consumer protection framework.
Following an investigation, the NCAA found the airline liable for consumer rights violations and misleading public statements, ordering compensation of 1,000 Special Drawing Rights for each of the three affected passengers and demanding a public apology.
The latest action against Qatar Airways reinforces what the agency describes as its ongoing commitment to rigorous monitoring and enforcement to ensure a safe, efficient and passenger-focused aviation industry in Nigeria.
