The Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN, led a high-level delegation to Maiduguri, Borno State, for a crucial one-day working visit focused on the upgrade of the General Muhammadu Buhari International Airport. This strategic upgrade aims to position the airport as a fully operational international gateway by January 1, 2025.
Keyamo was accompanied by key executives from aviation agencies, including Olubunmi Kuku, Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Engr. Farouk Umar, Managing Director of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), and Capt. Chris Najomo, Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).
The team was warmly received by His Excellency Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, Governor of Borno State, alongside representatives from other key agencies such as Customs, DSS, Immigration, and NDLEA.
The visit facilitated important discussions surrounding the upgrade, which is expected to enhance connectivity for the North East Zone, boost international travel, and establish Maiduguri as a regional cargo hub. Governor Zulum expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Minister Keyamo and emphasized Borno State’s commitment to supporting the successful implementation of the project.
Keyamo highlighted that the airport’s world-class runway and advanced facilities would serve as a symbol of growth for the region. This development, he noted, would not only improve accessibility but also stimulate the local economy by strengthening trade and transportation links.
The meeting also addressed logistical considerations necessary for the transition to international operations, ensuring a seamless experience for travelers and cargo operations.
This strategic visit underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to expanding Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure and fostering economic growth, while ensuring that all regions of the country benefit from enhanced connectivity and development.
