The Managing Director and Chief Executive of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, has emphasised the critical importance of collaboration and efficiency in trade facilitation, calling on stakeholders to embrace the National Single Window initiative.
Speaking at the National Single Window Stakeholders’ Forum held at the Marriott Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, on January 29, 2025, she outlined the initiative’s transformative potential in positioning Nigeria as a dominant force in global trade.
Mrs. Kuku highlighted aviation’s vital role in global commerce, referencing data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which states that air cargo facilitates the transportation of goods worth over $8 trillion annually, constituting 33% of global trade by volume. With Nigeria’s vast potential in manpower, resources, and infrastructure, she stressed that the Single Window initiative is pivotal in capturing a larger share of this trade market.
The event underscored the Federal Government’s commitment to enhancing trade volumes through improved air cargo services. Mrs. Kuku acknowledged the efforts of the Honourable Minister of Aviation, Mr. Festus Keyamo SAN, in establishing the Directorate of Cargo Development and Services. This directorate focuses on strengthening export routes, engaging in agro-export partnerships, and eliminating bottlenecks at airports to create an efficient and secure trade environment.
She further outlined FAAN’s dedication to transforming Nigerian airports into dynamic export and trade hubs in alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ambitious goal of expanding the economy to $1 trillion.
FAAN has initiated key measures such as implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for stakeholders, ensuring compliance with international standards, and integrating broader trade facilitation initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the Trade Facilitation Act of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
The National Single Window initiative, as highlighted by Kuku, represents an innovative digital platform that integrates government agencies, private stakeholders, and financial institutions to streamline trade processes.
She elaborated on its benefits, including increased efficiency, real-time transparency, cost savings, regulatory compliance, and stronger global trade relationships. By reducing bureaucratic bottlenecks, the initiative is set to enhance Nigeria’s position in international trade.
However, she also pointed out challenges such as fragmentation among agencies and a reluctance to collaborate, which could hinder progress. She called on stakeholders to embrace teamwork, stressing that sustainable progress can only be achieved through unified efforts. Quoting the artist Hans Hofmann, she noted, “The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak.”
In conclusion, she urged stakeholders to view the Single Window initiative not just as a technological advancement but as an opportunity to align under a shared vision of efficiency, economic growth, and national prosperity. She reaffirmed that successful implementation would increase trade volumes, greater revenue, and collective success for all involved.
Kuku’s address served as a rallying call for stakeholders to prioritize collaboration and innovation in building a modernized and efficient trade ecosystem for Nigeria.
